Why Ursuline

HOW WILL YOU...

11

Five hundred years ago, our foundress, St. Angela Merici, urged her followers to “risk new things.” Likewise, the Ursuline experience challenges you to go beyond the expected, and to stretch the limits of what you believe you can do. Teachers challenge each student to discover her full potential, and students encourage and support one another along the way.

Ursuline schools worldwide are rooted in a belief in the power of women, the importance of education, and a commitment to using our God-given talents to better the world.

Academic Overview

At Ursuline, we challenge our young women with a rich and vibrant curriculum centered in a strong community supporting the whole student, as she learns to inquire, research, risk, persist, and succeed.  We look to St. Angela Merici, our foundress, to guide us in our mission “to inspire young women to grow in faith, explore their academic potential, lead with confidence and help those in need.”  Teachers at Ursuline are more than instructors; they are mentors, coaches and club moderators invested in students’ growth as scholars and young women. They are committed to the development of the whole person and to providing a well-rounded education for each student.

Faith and Service

In keeping with Ursuline’s motto, Serviam, and the Christian call to help others, each student is required to perform some type of community service in keeping with her abilities and interests. Our goal is that each student comes to know the joy of giving others her most valuable gift–herself–and one of her most precious resources, her time. We are a Catholic school and in keeping with the Catholic faith, we welcome students from all denominations.  Theology is both an academic subject and a source of inspiration and values.  Our faith provides us with the courage to overcome obstacles and the joy of becoming our best selves.

Athletics

Ursuline Academy strives to integrate the physical and social health of our students through competitive athletic programs designed to develop well-rounded individuals. A school’s ability to offer opportunities that encourage leadership while developing athletic skills is essential to supporting a diverse student body. The success of an athletic program is reflected in the success of its student-athletes, and those achievements contribute to the overall reputation of the school. We are as proud of our consistent sportsmanship commendations by the MIAA as we are of our three Singelais awards in the past four years.

Arts

The study of the arts at Ursuline Academy is rooted in the philosophy that the arts are crucial to appreciating beauty and to understanding the human condition. We also firmly believe that performing and visual art skills can be taught — that there is no such thing as a person without any artistic aptitude. To that end, opportunities are available for students of any skill level to maximize their potential through the formal study of drawing, painting, or singing. A range of clubs and ensembles are available for students to practice and display their talents, whether their interest lies in theatre, music, or the fine arts.

THE URSULINE TRADITION

Tradition that dates back nearly 500 years

Every Ursuline girl is a part of a rich history and tradition that dates back nearly 500 years. Founded by St. Angela Merici in 1535, the Ursuline Order was established with the mission of educating and guiding young women. Today, we see this mission continue on our campus in Dedham as well as on the campuses of more than 100 Ursuline schools world wide that serve 40,000 students annually.

Ursuline Schools are part of the Ursuline Educational Network, a collaborative effort established to carry the Ursuline educational tradition into the future. Each school shares in the mission of St. Angela Merici and celebrates it in their classrooms as well as with wonderful traditions and events.
